Thinking about investing in a body contouring tweakment as the summer approaches? We all want to get our money’s worth and with the latest innovations and some handy tips, there are plenty of ways to ensure you can maximise your results from head-to-toe.
Whether you want to tone up your tummy or do away with your double chin, here’s what you need to know to get the very best outcomes, including the body tweaks to try and the advice to heed throughout your treatment plan.
1) Do your research: your options are getting better and better
By far the most famous body contouring treatment is liposuction – but the industry has come a long way since the boom of this invasive surgical option. (To summarise, ‘lipo’ involves your surgeon physically removing your excess body fat through a large inserted tube, so it’s not for the faint-hearted). Nowadays though, some significant fat reduction without large, noticeable scars is not just a pipe dream – it’s a real possibility – and there are plenty of exciting options on the table to consider. Some of our TTG favourites include:
AirSculpt: for double chins
One of the latest liposuction alternatives, AirSculpt works by plucking away at fat, cell by cell – and due to its innovative spinning technology, it doesn’t require scalpels, stitches or general anaesthesia. It’s also designed to target fat from any area with enough of it ‘to pinch’, making it great for persistent love handles and double chins (with the before-and-afters to prove it). Plus, it can remove a seriously impressive amount of fat – up to five litres per session, without any BMI restrictions.
Cristal Pro: for multiple areas
Over the past few years, fat freezing has seen both massive popularity and concerns about side effects, which is why devices such as Cristal Pro have innovated to ensure that safety and efficiency can co-exist. Its fat-sucking applicator, which crystallises your fat cells so they can be eliminated from your body, is paired with a clever diagnostic ultrasound scanner that allows your practitioner to see your fat layers for a more targeted treatment. Multiple areas can be treated at the same time too, so you don’t have to spend quite so long in the clinic.
Emerald Laser: for no pain at all
There’s even now a totally non-invasive option for body contouring, which basically involves just having a nap – with no heat, pressure or jabs to endure. Emerald Laser uses harmless but effective green low-level laser light to target your fat cells, creating temporary pores in them so that the fat leaches out to be removed by the body’s lymphatic system. You’ll need multiple sessions of lying under the glowing beams but the results get gradually more apparent over time, with the FDA-approved laser having the award wins to prove it.
2) Consider skin quality not just your dress size
Here’s another way the body contouring industry is changing: it’s not just about fat loss anymore. As anyone who has lost a significant amount of weight will tell you, loose, slack skin can be just as much of a concern as pockets of fat – and skin quality-boosting treatments, in general, are on the rise. That means being ‘stick thin’ doesn’t have to be your only goal from body contouring (if you don’t want it to be).
InMode BodyTite: for skin tightening
From the same company that brought us the social-media-famous Morpheus8, BodyTite is a device garnering lots of excitement for its ability to not only melt fat but also tighten the skin on top of it. That means a smoother, firmer-looking silhouette all round. It works by using radiofrequency, delivered via cannula under the skin, and the technology is specifically designed to treat large areas of the body, including the thighs and stomach, where sagging skin can be especially annoying.
Lanluma: for defining your curves
Body contouring isn’t just about losing fat – it can be about enhancing what you already have too. Case-in-point: Lanluma – which can lift your bum, or smooth areas of cellulite on your thighs to define – not remove – your curves. The dermal filler-based treatment is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which means it can activate the body’s collagen response, leading to long-lasting volume in the targeted areas you want to define and tone.
3) But beware ‘quick fixes’
While more minimally invasive body tweaks are on the rise, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can emerge from the treatment bed ‘transformed’ without any side effects. (Frankly, run a mile if a practitioner tries to promise to do that). Instead, you still often have a decision to make: be slow or steady, or, be downtime aware.
The clever technologies offering a less invasive alternative to liposuction are still likely to cause some degree of bruising, swelling and a need for the treated areas to heal over at least a week. (Even AirSculpt, for example, requires a rather glamorous compression garment to be worn for about a fortnight). Then, on the other end of the spectrum, totally non-invasive treatments, such as Emerald, require multiple sessions and a slower pathway to body contouring results. That means, whichever method you choose, you need to plan ahead to ensure you see the results you want when you want them.
4) Don’t forget your lifestyle
It can be tempting to put all your energy into searching out the ‘magic ticket’ tweak that you hope will solve all your body contouring concerns. However, (and we do have to rather bang on about it), the old adage is true: sharpening up your lifestyle choices is the number one way to supercharge your body contouring results.
What we mean by that is getting more sleep, enjoying regular exercise (to keep the muscles underneath your skin strong and supportive), and revamping your diet a bit. By eating more lean veg and proteins in place of highly sugary foods, while also upping your water intake (and skipping that extra glass of wine), you’ll be surprised how much of a difference those small changes will make. Plus, it will support all the sculpting you’re investing in too.
