Nothing is certain in life except death, taxes and – for women – probably cellulite. After all, it is said to affect at least nine out of ten women post-puberty. Fortunately, the skin condition is totally harmless, but the dimples or lumps on your bum and legs can be irritatingly hard to shift if it annoys you. That’s why we were excited to learn about the success that Dr Galyna Selezneva has been having with Cellution – a four-in-one cellulite treatment that quickly aims to smooth, tighten and contour your body. Alice went to meet her to find out all about it…
Firstly, a quick recap. What is cellulite?
Cellulite is caused by fat cells pushing against your skin’s connective tissue, causing a dimpled or lumpy skin appearance. The main culprit – our fibroid bands, as Dr Galyna explains:
“In our bodies, we have fibroid bands that run between the fascia that sits on top of the muscle through the subcutaneous fat layer and into the skin. These bands attach themselves to the skin and pull it in. Unfortunately, the stronger the pull of the fibroid band, the more we see a rippling and dimpling effect. That is cellulite.”
Cellulite is particularly prevalent on your upper legs and bum and unfortunately, it is very common too: ““100 per cent of women will probably experience cellulite at one point in their life,” Dr Galyna remarks. That tends to be because of hormonal changes, weight changes (especially putting on weight) and our skin losing its elasticity, collagen and hyaluronic acid as we age.
“It’s all very normal and from a health perspective, it’s harmless,” says Dr Galyna. “However, from an aesthetic perspective, it’s probably the number one most requested treatment when it comes to my patients. And, because cellulite can be so multifaceted, a simple solution for cellulite can be so hard to find.”
How does Cellution work?
Traditionally body contouring devices only looked at one aspect of cellulite – meaning you potentially needed a lot of different treatments to see good results. Cellution is different. Deleo (the company behind it) has looked at what really works when it comes to the skin condition and put all those attributes in one machine to be used all in one session.
“Cellution has taken four different cellulite-tackling technologies and fused them into one device,” affirms Dr Galyna. “The main purpose of the treatment is to reduce the appearance of cellulite – and we are getting really great results with that – but it does so much more. It tightens the skin, promotes lymphatic drainage, and it contours your silhouette too.”
The technology uses:
The treatment then finishes with a round of Shockwave, which uses very high frequency vibration that again breaks down the pull of the fibroid bands, stimulates lymphatic drainage and improves blood circulation.
What areas can you get treated?
Alongside the usual offenders – aka your saddlebags, bum and the front of the legs – you can also have Cellution on your abdomen and arms. In fact, many women opt to have multiple areas treated in one session.
How long is the treatment process?
It depends on the area getting treated but it is a relatively quick treatment. Within an hour you’re done, and you can do two or three sessions a week. “So even if you have a quick holiday coming up and you really want to perk yourself up, you can complete the treatment in two to three weeks,” reveals Dr Galyna.
What sort of results can you get?
The results certainly sound impressive. A clinical study on Cellution shows an average reduction in circumference of 3cm on the hips and 2.9cm on the waist, without weight loss. You can also see results even after a single treatment, although for the best results it’s recommended you book in for six to 10 sessions.
Is Cellution painful?
In good news, it’s a pleasant experience – with no pain. Gina our gallant tester commented it actually felt “quite relaxing” to be lying on the treatment bed. During the main part of the experience it even felt like she was “on the massage chair” and only the noise of the shockwave was slightly disconcerting at the end.
What other benefits does Cellution have?
It’s not just cellulite and body contouring that Cellution can help with – there are wellness benefits too!
“The lymphatic drainage activation gets rid of the debris and I’ve had male patients who do the procedure for reduction of the muscle pain, as you are flushing out the lactic acid build up after workouts,” says Dr Galyna. “I personally do it after a busy day when I want to feel light on my feet again. So it gives you that pick me up too. It almost gives you that endorphins. It’s a really good wellness treatment.”
Who is suitable for Cellution?
The benefits are quite universal as it can tackle different types of cellulite and it is suitable for all skin types and tones. Sometimes on a larger patient you might want to combine it with more fat specific treatments, for example, Cristal Pro cryolipolysis (fat freezing), Cristal Fit which is a muscle toning machine; and radiofrequency devices.
Anything else to note?
As part of the treatment, Dr Galyna and her team also advise on lifestyle modification. “For example, the simplest way to stimulate lymphatic drainage is physical exercise, but you don’t have to do two hours at the gym. Try 15-20 minutes brisk walk. Water too. Hydration is a guaranteed way to stimulate your lymphatic system.”
