Would You Have 1,250 Jabs In Five Minutes? Alice Did!

I wouldn’t normally opt to be the first to try a new aesthetic device (it may sometimes seem like that, but I’ve learned it’s usually best to wait until practitioners have got the hang of whatever new toy they’ve acquired before offering myself up as a guinea pig). But when the demo model dropped out of the launch event for the Dermashine injection device, I had a rush of blood to the head and volunteered to hop onto the treatment couch in front of an audience of aesthetic professionals and see what it was like.

What’s interesting about Dermashine?

The Dermashine Pro is an automated injection device with nine hollow needles in its treatment head, and can be used to inject anything fluid enough to get through those ultra-fine (32 gauge or 34 gauge) needles. Mesotherapy cocktails, skin boosters, PRP, polynucleotides… and the key attraction is that it can treat a whole face with any of these in around five minutes, which sounds greatly preferable to having a faceful of tiny freehand injections. Add to that that this is the go-to auto-injection device in Korea, where you can find it in thousands of clinics, and you’ll see why I wanted to try it.

Still, it’s a lot of injections.

“Yes, there will be 1,250 pinprick holes in your face after this,” said Jim Westwood of Novus Medical, who had organised the launch.

“Woah, make sure you have numbing,” said my friend Kym Cowper, who came along to the event. She was visiting London from Australia, where the Dermashine is also popular, and as partnerships director of Aussie aesthetics-industry title Spa and Clinic, she had already given the device a whirl. “It’s quite spicy!” With that in mind, I made sure I had a good dose of numbing cream.

How does it work?

Dr Vincent Wong, who has been training practitioners to use the device, loaded it up with NCTF, a mesotherapy mix of hyaluronic acid, vitamins, and minerals, and tried a test shot on my forehead. I could barely feel anything.

“What I really like about this device,” he explains, is that it automatically senses the skin, creates suction, then does the injection automatically. You can select how fast you want the product to flow through the needles, and the number of shots that you want to give – around 130 for a full face – and the machine calculates how much product to deliver. That means you get consistency across the depth of injection, and also the volume that you’re injecting.

How deep do the needles go?

They could go as deep as 3mm; it depends on what you’re injecting. For my treatment, it was 0.5mm for the forehead and around the eyes, and 0.8mm for the rest of my face. And what’s the point of the suction?  “It pulls the skin up so it’s taut, then delivers the injection directly, which makes it more comfortable for the patient and also helps to avoid blood vessels,” he says.

Afterwards – almost nothing to see

That’s about all there is to say – in another five minutes, my face was done. There was a bit of redness, a light grid-pattern where the injections had gone in, but within an hour, there was barely anything to see. Wow. That was so easy!

Kate Monteith-Ross: ‘Making it easy’ is what has endeared the Dermashine to aesthetic nurse Kate Monteith-Ross of The Clinic by La Ross in Rochester, who has had the device in clinic for five months.

“It’s important that patients build into their yearly treatments a steady flow of skin boosters or amino acid replacement therapy, or polynucleotides, because they play a key role in skin health and vitality,” she says. “The difficulty is that people don’t want the downtime. They find having multiple injections uncomfortable, and with polynucleotides, say, they might be left with those small bumps on their face and necks for three days. For a lot of people, it’s enough to put them off having the treatment again.

With this device, people can have these treatments pain-free, with no downtime, and they’re much more likely to have the treatment again. I did a Jalupro treatment today for someone, and she had no marks on her face afterwards. She also felt it was very comfortable even without numbing, and she said if she’d had that a year ago, she’d have booked more of these treatments in. A lot of people have been nervous with these devices, wondering if we really can control the depth so precisely, but with this one, with the suction technology, I think we really can be. So  you’re able to pinpoint that position in the tissue where you’ll hit the fibroblasts precisely, you’ll reduce downtime and it gives patients more of a VIP experience.”

Galyna Selezneva: Award-winning aesthetic doctor Galyna signed up just minutes into her Dermashine demo, that’s how much she wanted it in her clinic in Knightsbridge, London.

“As an aesthetic doctor who predominantly works with skin health and regenerative medicine, I needed a tool to optimise my delivery of bio stimulants into skin,” she explains. “At times, needle work or cannula are uncomfortable for the patient, not to mention downtime and bruising risk. Four minutes into the Dermoshine device demo, I signed up. I work a lot on face and body areas, so it’s not uncommon for the patients to have multiple areas injected in a single session. The takeaway

Ultimately, Dermashine Pro looks…good. It’s not in many clinics yet, but I’m sure if your practitioner takes one on, you’ll be hearing all about it, and take it from me, it makes a faceful of injections a piece of cake.
