What’s the lure of an injectable moisturiser treatment? Journalist Jane Cunningham, whom you may well know as British Beauty Blogger, tore herself away from her latest Substack article to explain why she loves the effects of Profhilo and gives her review on why she finds it’s a treatment well worth paying for.
It’s safe to say that I loved Profhilo, the non-surgical injectable hyaluronic acid treatment. I’ve had it several times (although I don’t have it regularly), and whether it’s for you will depend upon how you are with needles because this is a needle-heavy process. But, it’s the sort of radiance-giving treatment that gives you a ‘you but better’ result; where your friends will ask you why you look so well or quietly wonder if you’re having amazing sex – yes, that kind of a glow.
I think it’s a perfect mid-life treatment for anti-ageing sceptics because it bridges the gap between procedure and treatment. It’s not permanent, nobody’s going to wonder why your brows are higher, or your lips are suddenly more luscious – it’s more of an epidermal pick-me-up than a full-scale attack on the ageing process.
If you don’t like needles, you’re better off having the sex to be honest, because it’s not the most comfortable of treatments. Profhilo doesn’t contain lidocaine unlike other needle applications so you are going to feel a sting or slight burn – I mean, a needle in your skin is a needle in your skin so you can slightly gauge whether this is right for you from any other needle treatments you might have had. You can, of course, have a numbing cream applied before the injections which will take some of the pain out but I can’t say it doesn’t hurt because, fleetingly, it jolly well does! I did have to grit my teeth for the neck injections which felt more painful than my face.
Profhilo application is done to a format – and it’s the same format for everyone: 6 injections in the face and six in the neck if you are having your neck treated as well. You will see some raised bumps around the injection sites for a day or so – it’s minor and I’ve never noticed anyone staring, but take a scarf to your appointment if you think you might feel self-conscious.
I really loved the results for my neck initially, but the effects wore off more quickly than on my face. While the claimed 6-9 months of improved skin quality might be a bit of a stretch, I had that mysteriously satisfied glow fully for at least three-to-four months before it started to fade off.
Because hyaluronic acid in Profhilo attracts water to the skin, my result was plump, smoother skin with an exceptional radiance and light bounce. I can easily go without foundation after a session but if you’re using a base, even that will apply beautifully evenly and noticeably effortlessly. Behind the scenes, your collagen and elastin are being stimulated too – the holy grail of internal skin repair.
Profhilo is also used for improving skin laxity anywhere such as arms, knees, hands, and décolleté. I personally wouldn’t even contemplate it for arms and knees although if I was concerned about my hands I’d give that a whirl because it’s such a visible place.
Profhilo is a very attractive treatment for special occasions – it takes three weeks for the glow to start to become apparent, and you initially need two treatments, three to four weeks apart. So, do plan ahead if you’re having the procedure, which on me, reached its peak about two months in. I haven’t had it in a while and writing this has made me miss it!
I have my Profhilo administered by Dr Richard Brighton-Knight at Change Aesthetics where I go for everything I have done privately (toxin to keep my lids up and light filler in my cheeks). It’s the treatment I recommend to friends who feel they look tired – they don’t want to turn back the clock but they do want their face vibrancy restored and for that alone, it’s worth the painful pricking.
