Aviclear

Last Updated: 30 October 2025

AviClear is the world’s first FDA-cleared laser treatment specifically designed to tackle mild, moderate and severe acne – and best of all, it doesn’t just target the symptoms. In fact, AviClear goes straight to the root cause of your breakouts: targeting and shrinking the sebaceous glands (those tiny oil factories under your skin that love to overdo it in blemish-prone skin).

Created by Cutera, the AviClear laser uses a unique 1726 nm wavelength to gently and precisely turn down the dial on oil production, leading to fewer, less severe breakouts. It’s non-invasive, doesn’t involve any medication, and works on all skin tones. So, it’s essentially a high-tech alternative to antibiotics or Roaccutane. Read on to find out all you need to know about Aviclear – the laser solution for active acne…

What is AviClear?

AviClear by Cutera is the first (and currently only) FDA-cleared energy device for acne, which means it’s making a pretty big splash in the aesthetics industry. No wonder Dr Anajli Mahto has dubbed it “the most exciting thing to happen in the world of acne in a long time.”

Most acne solutions treat the symptoms (aka lesions), but this clever tech is designed to target acne at its source instead, which means it can treat mild, moderate, and severe breakouts without prolonged, aggressive side effects for your skin.

How exactly does it work?

In short: it tells your overactive oil glands to chill out.

The laser technology uses a particular 1726nm wavelength of light which is a able to selectively target oil glands, shrink them, and suppress oil production. Less oil means fewer blockages, fewer breakouts, and clearer, calmer skin over time. And thanks to the clever cooling system (called AviCool™), the treatment is made more comfortable.

Why We Recommend Aviclear

Alice Hart-Davis
Founder, The Tweakments Guide

Finally we have an innovative solution for active acne! Until now it has been all but impossible to treat one of the most stubborn and confidence-affecting skin concerns there is without medication, but this clever technology does so. And, because it targets acne at its source - aka your overactive oil glands - the laser treatment doesn't just banish your blemishes (however severe they may be), it also helps you avoid future breakouts too, with long-lasting results.

What are the benefits of Aviclear?

  • Reduces appearance of acne: From mild congestion to severe hormonal breakouts, Aviclear offers clinically-proven and long-lasting results

  • Decreases oiliness: Your skin can also feel less greasy over time due to the laser reducing the activity of your oil glands

  • Prevents future breakouts: Fewer blocked pores means fewer future flare-ups and a smoother, calmer complexion that’s less prone to scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

  • Boots confidence: Acne can have a really impact on your self-esteem, whatever your age, so clearer skin tends to come with a noticeable lift in confidence.

  • Offers Drug-free option: Acts as a science-backed alternative to antibiotics or Roaccutane

Why is the technology considered a breakthrough?

Treating acne has always been tricky. In fact, active acne breakouts are sometimes a firm contraindication (aka a no-go area) for many treatments, leaving those struggling with breakouts without a helping hand, while increasing their risk of side effects including low self-esteem and scarring.

By going to the root cause of the problem, AviClear gives acne sufferers a long-lasting solution, and it is therefore a breakthrough for people who are truly fed up with acne and want something that actually changes the way their skin behaves. Plus, it is a totally drug-free acne solution that’s proven to work on active acne for long-lasting skin improvements however old you are.

It’s not a magical fix – it takes commitment, and results aren’t instant – but it is a clever, clinically backed option that really works for many. If you’ve been stuck in the cycle of trying one topical after another, this might just be the way out.

Who is it suitable for?

From spotty teenagers to stubborn adult acne during menopause, what’s great about AviClear is that it can be used to treat any kind of acne – whether it’s hormonal, cystic, or just that endless stream of monthly breakouts. It’s an especially good tool for anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to go on oral medication, those going through fertility treatment, or women going through the menopause and taking HRT.

It’s especially appealing if:

  • You’ve tried everything and nothing sticks

  • You want to avoid harsh medications or long-term antibiotics

  • You’ve been offered isotretinoin (Roaccutane) but aren’t keen on the potential side effects

Best of all, it’s also suitable for all skin types and tones, because the precise technology prevents injury to the skin’s surface, eliminating the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in Black skin tones.

How quickly can you see results?

It depends on the severity of your breakouts, but most people need three sessions spaced four weeks apart to see their skin become clearer and smoother – so a bit of patience is required.

That said, results actually get better and better as time goes on – and can last up to two years as a minimum.

Most impressively, in AviClear’s clinical study, 30% of patients treated with AviClear saw their acne reduce in three months, 60% saw it clear in six months and 90% found it resolved at 12 months.

What is Aviclear used to treat

What is a treatment like to have?

Each AviClear treatment takes about 30 minutes – so it’s a relatively quick experience once you are on the treatment bed. In fact, most of the time is taken up by skin prep too.

First of all, your face needs to be completely clear of any oil, so your practitioner will degrease your skin with an acetone wipe. Once that is done, a lot of water is applied to your skin alongside lots of soaked gauze pads to keep the surface really well-hydrated and cool. It will feel a little like being wrapped up like a mummy – but they aren’t tight or heavy on your face, don’t worry.

Then, your practitioner starts using the hand-held device moving it across the skin to target your oil glands with its directed energy. During this process, the gauze pads are removed and then replaced in turn, to keep your skin suitably damp.

Does it hurt? What is the downtime?

The clever minds at Cutera (the company behind AviClear) have done all they can to reduce downtime and pain during and after treatment.

The device is equipped with AviCool technology, a smart skin-cooling feature designed to enhance comfort during treatment. That means you feel a “little tiny pinch” as the laser is used on the skin – around a 3 to a 5 on the pain scale – but you don’t need numbing cream. It’s most uncomfortable around sensitive areas such as the eyes, but this discomfort is short and sharp.

You are likely to be red or flushed for a few days after the treatment, and there’s a small chance of a short-lived breakout as your skin purges – but generally there’s no peeling and no crusting so you don’t have to hide away at home.

Aviclear

How much does AviClear cost?

You can expect to pay around £4500 for the full course of treatment – that’s the cost at Dr Anjali Mahto’s Self Clinic – a practitioner we totally trust for her acne expertise (and you want to be in safe hands when treating breakouts). Yes, it’s an investment—but for those who’ve tried endless products, GP visits, and dermatologist prescriptions, it could end up saving you time, money, and stress.

Are there any limitations to Aviclear?

The one aspect of acne that Aviclear does’t treat is existing post-acne scarring – so, if this is also a concern of yours – you’ll need to discuss other treatments with your practitioner. However, because Aviclear does reduce the frequency of breakouts, it can minimise your risk of further scarring.

Equally, if you are currently using isotretinoin, you’ll need to wait – up to six months – before starting Aviclear, due to strong retinoids’ sensitising effect on your skin. That can lengthen the time it takes before you see your results.
