Humans have been enhancing their lips with lipstick for thousands of years, going all the way back to Ancient Sumeria where both men and women would apply crushed gemstones to make their lips more eye-catching. Lipstick is, of course, a mainstay of modern makeup routines, but over the last twenty years or so there has been a sharp rise in the use of dermal fillers to boost volume in the lips, making them appear fuller and more luscious without the need for lipstick. The effect is instantaneous, pronounced, and involves very limited downtime, so the increased popularity is understandable.
You do have to be careful with lip fillers, though, as with dermal fillers in general. The regulation surrounding fillers is very limited and absolutely anyone can go on a two-day course, buy some filler off the internet, and set themselves up as a practitioner. This can and does lead to some of the disastrous results you often see reported in the press. The good news is that there are a lot of very good practitioners out there—you just have to know where to look.
