Retinol or other retinoids such as hydroxypinacolone retinoate (HPR) or tretinoin boost collagen levels in the skin by kickstarting collagen production as well as slowing down the rate at which existing collagen gets broken down – so existing collagen hangs around for longer as well as collagen being made more quickly. This helps to keep the skin firm and stop it from sagging. Retinoids also encourage your skin cells to renew themselves that bit faster, which improves the rate of creation of new, firmer skin.
