Alice says
“This is a terrific chemical exfoliant based on salicylic acid which clears congested pores and is anti-inflammatory, too. It’s ideal for oily, spotty or combination skin that has a habit of breaking out.”
Here’s why it’s so good.
- This is an acid exfoliant containing 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), ie salicylic acid
- Like an alpha hydroxy acid, BHA exfoliates your skin by dissolving the bonds that hold old dead cells onto the surface of the skin – but BHA has an extra trick up its sleeve. It can dissolve in oil, so it can wriggle its way right into blocked, oily pores, and clean them out from the inside, which is why it is so helpful for acne-prone skin.
- You might think this would dry the skin but, like alpha hydroxy acids, BHA has a hydrating effect on the skin, so it helps the skin to moisturise itself from the inside.
- BHA is anti-inflammatory, too, which helps calm breakouts, and the formula includes a number of botanical anti-inflammatory ingredients – chamomile extract, arnica, thyme and cucumber — which help enhance the soothing effect, and which also make the product smell delicious.

Apply to clean, dry skin. Put some of the tonic on cotton wool, and wipe it over your face. If you have combination skin, you may just want to concentrate on the oilier areas such as the centre panel of the face, though because this product has an exfoliating effect, and also helps to improve skin hydration, it will be helpful to use it all over your face.

This website has helped me to understand the confusing beauty industry. The products I have bought have genuinely changed my skin for the better. It is still a work in progress, but using Vitamin C in the mornings and retinol, every other night seems to cover texture issues. The Alpha H product is a game changer. I am taking Alice”s advice and using it only every other night, in-between my mild retinol use, but my goodness, noticeable results on pores/blackheads. All in all, such a huge pleasure to find independent, tested, rational and clear advice.
