IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
What is IPL?
Best known perhaps for hair removal, IPL is also really useful in facial tweakments. The IPL machine produces flashes of intense light that shatter brown or red pigment in the skin, which are then cleared away by the body’s lymphatic system. This means it is good for clearing away both brown age spots or patches of irregular pigmentation (brown pigment), and also thread veins and the redness of rosacea (red pigment). It’s not a permanent change as more pigmentation or redness or other thread veins will emerge over time, but it makes an impressive difference.
Pain level: Low
Cost from: £150
Recovery time: 1 Day
Where is IPL used for:
Face, neck, decolletage, hands
How does IPL work:
The IPL machine produces flashes of intense light that shatter brown or red pigment in the skin, which are then cleared away by the body’s lymphatic system. Unlike laser, which strikes at one very specific depth in the skin, IPL has more of a ‘scattergun’ effect reaching to slightly different depths
How long does IPL take:
Around 30 minutes
Not usually needed
Dark spots look darker for a couple of days, then begin to fade
For brown spots will fade noticeably and rosacea will become less obvious, but not forever, so treatment will need repeating every 6-12 months.
After treatment/down time:
No down time. Need to protect the skin extra-carefully from UV light.
Things to bear in mind:
Because this treatment targets pigment in the skin, it works best on lighter skins, though some IPL machines can treat olive and light brown skin as well.
