DEFYNE is one of the dermal fillers in Galderma’s Restylane brand, a pioneer and leader in hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. DEFYNE features Galderma’s innovative Optimal Balance Technology (OBT), a process of cross-linking hyaluronic acid molecules to produce a filler that delivers exactly the degrees of firmness, elasticity, and longevity needed for specific facial filling needs.

DEFYNE is a relatively soft and flexible filler suitable for use in facial areas where you have thin tissue coverage. The United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved DEFYNE in 2021 for the augmentation and correction of mild to moderate chin retrusion in adults aged 21 or older. DEFYNE is also widely used for minimising nose-to-mouth lines and marionette lines, the lines that run down from the corners of your mouth to your chin.

DEFYNE is a terrific filler for making subtle but lasting changes to your face. DEFYNE’s cross-linked HA molecules give the balance of firmness and flexibility a practitioner needs to sculpt and enhance your chin projection while retaining your natural expression and movements. DEFYNE is also great for reducing your nose-to-mouth lines and marionette lines.

About Restylane Defyne

Why We Recommend DEFYNE

‘DEFYNE is a terrific filler for making subtle but lasting changes to your face. DEFYNE’s cross-linked HA molecules give the balance of firmness and flexibility a practitioner needs to sculpt and enhance your chin projection while retaining your natural expression and movements. DEFYNE is also great for reducing your nose-to-mouth lines and marionette lines.’

Why might you be interested in DEFYNE?

You might be interested in DEFYNE for two main reasons.

First, if you’re unhappy with the shape or size of your chin, DEFYNE injections can offer precise reshaping and enhancement.

Second, if your face has developed nose-to-mouth lines or marionette lines that are deeper than you would like, DEFYNE injections can reduce those lines, making them less visible. These lines gradually become more noticeable as we age, because our skin produces less collagen and elastin, the proteins that (respectively) provide structure for the skin and keep it stretchy; because our faces retain less of the subcutaneous fat that gives them their youthful contours; and because years of making facial expressions, from smiles to scowls, deepen the lines where our skin folds.

How does a DEFYNE treatment work?

Before the treatment, you meet with the practitioner so they can examine your facial structure, learn your medical history and your aesthetic goals, and agree a treatment plan with you.

For the treatment, the practitioner cleanses your skin thoroughly, and then injects DEFYNE into the treatment area or areas using either a fine needle or a cannula (a thin, flexible tube). After injecting the filler, the practitioner may massage the area to distribute and shape the filler as needed.

How long do the results last?

DEFYNE lasts for up to 12 months.

Is treatment with DEFYNE painful?

No. Treatment with DEFYNE isn’t painful, but you may experience mild discomfort. Standard formulations of DEFYNE include lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, to alleviate any pain. Confirm with your practitioner that the DEFYNE they will use includes lidocaine; if not, you can ask the practitioner to numb the treatment areas beforehand with another form of anaesthetic, such as a numbing cream. If you’re worried about the injections hurting, ask your practitioner to numb the treatment areas beforehand.

Where can DEFYNE be used?

DEFYNE is most frequently used on the following four parts of the face:

  • DEFYNE is used to augment and reshape the chin. This is the purpose for which DEFYNE’s use has been approved by the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
  • Mental crease. Your mental crease is the horizontal line that appears on your chin, just below your lower lip, when you pucker your lips. (In case you’re wondering — here, the word ‘mental’ comes from the Latin word for ‘chin’, mentum, rather than the Latin word for ‘mind’, mens, which gives us the more widely used version of the word ‘mental’.) DEFYNE is used to fill in the mental crease, making it less visible.
  • Nasolabial folds. These lines that run down from each side of your nose to the corners of your mouth are sometimes called ‘laugh lines’ or ‘smile lines’. DEFYNE is used to fill in these lines, making them less visible.
  • Marionette lines. These are the lines that run down from the corners of your mouth to your chin. DEFYNE is used to fill in these lines and make them less prominent.

How long does DEFYNE treatment take?

A treatment with DEFYNE usually takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on which  and how many facial areas you’re having treated.

In some cases, you may need a touch-up treatment a couple of weeks after the initial treatment to give you optimum results.

To maintain your treatment results in the long term, you may want to have top-up treatments. These treatments would typically use smaller amounts of DEFYNE filler — just enough to restore any volume the treatment areas have lost. Consult your practitioner about such top-up treatments and when to have them.

How quickly can you see results from DEFYNE treatment?

Adding the filler to your face changes its contours, so you will see a change immediately. As any swelling from the injections decreases and the filler settles in your face, you will see the results more clearly.

At what age can you get DEFYNE treatment?

You can get DEFYNE treatment from the age of 18 in the UK.

How much does a DEFYNE treatment cost?

The cost of a DEFYNE treatment varies depending on the amount of filler required and the geographical location in which you’re having the treatment. Typical prices start at £250 for a treatment that uses 1ml of DEFYNE.

Will I have scars from DEFYNE treatment?

No. DEFYNE is a noninvasive treatment and causes no scars.

Are there side-effects from DEFYNE treatment?

DEFYNE treatment has minimal downtime and modest side effects. Typically, patients can resume their normal activity the same day, so you could go back to work after a lunchtime appointment.

You may experience some redness, swelling, tenderness, or bruising in the area treated. These side effects will usually disappear within a week; if not, consult your practitioner for advice.

What is the aftercare advice following a DEFYNE treatment?

After your DEFYNE treatment, be gentle with the treatment areas. After the procedure, give the treatment areas time to settle down rather than applying make-up to them immediately. About 24 hours after the treatment, you can apply a light cover-up if needed. If you have remaining redness, try a concealer with a slight green or yellow tone. If you have bruising, try a yellow-toned concealer.

Who makes DEFYNE?

DEFYNE is manufactured and marketed by Galderma, a pharmaceutical company with a worldwide presence and more that 6,000 employees. DEFYNE is part of Galderma’s Restylane brand of hyaluronic acid fillers, which also includes Restylane LYFT, Restylane REFYNE, and Restylane KYSSE. Restylane specialises in HA fillers close in composition to your skin’s own HA and is a highly trusted brand, with more than 65 million treatments delivered worldwide.

Who are dermal fillers not suitable for?

Dermal fillers, such as DEFYNE, are not suitable for the following people with the following conditions:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid having dermal fillers while you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Younger than 18. Dermal fillers are generally not recommended if your body is still growing.
  • Active skin infections. Clear up any active skin infections, such as acne or cold sores, before having dermal fillers.
  • Autoimmune diseases. These diseases generally preclude the use of dermal fillers.
  • Using medication that affects bleeding. If you are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, or other medication that affects bleeding, discuss it with your practitioner.

You should also ask your practitioner about any other conditions that may make you unsuitable for treatment with DEFYNE.
