Wrinkly Tummy

Whether it’s a souvenir from significant weight loss, a reminder of the journey of pregnancy, or simply part of the ageing process, a wrinkly stomach might be less frequently discussed than the ‘laughter lines’ on our faces, but it can still have a real impact on our body confidence. That’s especially true in the summer during swimsuit season and when you want to wear a slinky fitted dress in the evenings. Read our FAQs to discover why wrinkles on your tummy can start to appear, as well as the lifestyle changes and treatment options that can make your stomach smoother and firmer should you wish, whatever age you might be.

What is a wrinkly tummy?

Just like the wrinkles that can appear on your face, a wrinkly tummy refers to permanent lines that form across your stomach, which are the result of loose, sagging and crepey skin. The lines are a separate cosmetic concern to excessive fat, which can be responsible for pesky stomach rolls, although the two things can occur together.

A wrinkly tummy can affect both the upper and lower abdomen, with the severity of the wrinkles depending on your body type, and the underlying causes of the skin laxity. The wrinkles can be most noticeable when you are in a seated or bent position, or when you are moving. However, if the skin on your stomach has lost a lot of elasticity and has becomes less taunt, the wrinkles may also become more visible when you are standing upright over time. It’s these permanent lines that can be of most bothersome.

Can age cause my tummy to be wrinkly?

Just like with your face, one of the main reasons that your stomach becomes wrinkled is through age. Key structural proteins in the skin, especially collagen and elastin, decline over time, leading to a loss in firmness and elasticity, while the loss of subcutaneous fat, especially in the stomach area, can contribute to wrinkle appearance. How significant this age-related wrinkling is probably has a lot to do with your genes – as some individuals are more prone to developing wrinkles than others. However, if you’ve done a lot of stomach-out sunbathing, you may have accelerated skin ageing through overexposure to the sun’s UV rays, which break down collagen and elastin fibres.

Will my tummy be wrinkly after pregnancy?

The changes that occur to your body during and after pregnancy can be very individual so it’s not guaranteed that everyone will get a wrinkly tummy post-childbirth. However, due to the skin on your stomach stretching to accommodate the expansion of your growing baby, it is possible that your skin will be a little wrinkly. That’s why significant weight fluctuations in general can also lead to skin sagging. How quickly, and how completely, your skin responds and retracts back after pregnancy is also individual. It is likely to depend on factors including any preventive treatments you tried through your trimesters, your diet, exercise and overall lifestyle.

What surgical options are available?

  1. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck): By surgically removal excess skin and fat, while tightening the muscle, you can address significantly wrinkly skin on your skin. The procedure offers dramatic results, but the downtime is significant and as with all surgery, it carries more risks.

What tweakments are on offer to treat a wrinkly tummy?

For stomach wrinkles, your best solution is likely to be a little tweak as it can be a tricky area to treat. But, don’t worry, you don’t necessarily have to have anything surgical nowadays (although this is still an option for considerable skin sagging in the area). Here are some of our favourite options:

  1. Laser skin treatments: Laser devices emit concentrated light energy that generates heat within the skin, stimulating collagen production, with a tightening and firming effect over time. Ablative lasers, such as Stellar M22 and UltraClear, remove the skin’s outer layer to resurface and tighten, while non-ablative lasers, including Secret Duo by Cutera and MOXI, heat the underlying layers without removing the surface, stimulating firming and tightening.
  2. Peels: Skin peels use acid to dissolve the bonds that are holding old, dead skin cells onto the skin’s surface and a superficial peel, of which there are plenty of options, can help tackle fine lines and mild wrinkling on the body.
  3. Radiofrequency: By heating up the deeper layers of the skin to create controlled injury using radiofrequency energy, RF treatments can provide an albeit gradual tightening of loose skin on your stomach. Examples include the BTL Exilis Ultra 360.
  4. RF Microneedling: By combining microneedling with RF energy, you can get even more tailored skin texture and firming results for your tummy, again through enhanced collagen production and skin tightening. Try Sylfirm X.
  5. HIFEM: Standing for high-intensity focused electro-magnetic technology, body contouring devices, such as EMSCULPT Neo and Stimsure, use electromagnetic contractions to stimulate muscle contractions. This can tighten your skin, smoothing the appearance of wrinkling.
  6. Ultrasound: Ultrasound energy is really good at stimulating collagen production, which means it can lift wrinkly skin through gradual skin tightening over time. The best known example is Sofwave.

How to get rid of a wrinkly tummy through lifestyle changes?

If the wrinkling is fairly mild and likely to be weight-related, you can get quite a good result from lifestyle changes. That includes building a more tailored strength training routine to build muscle tone, which could perhaps include exercises such as planks, crunches, and other core-toning activities. A healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals can also promote overall skin health, as can staying hydrated. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption may also accelerate skin ageing, leading to wrinkly, so moderating or stopping these behaviours is recommended.

Can at-home use devices help with a wrinkly stomach?

There are a few at-home devices that market themselves as improving the overall appearance of your stomach, such as electrical muscle stimulation toning belts, at-home radiofrequency devices and even LED light therapy (we love the DermaLux Flex MD). However, none promise results that can match in-clinic treatments for wrinkly skin on your tummy.

Could a wrinkly tummy be a sign of a medical issue?

As wrinkles on your stomach are often the result of natural processes, such as ageing and pregnancy, they are very rarely a sign of a serious health issue. Some medications and conditions could affect your skin’s overall collagen and elastin levels though, contributing to changes in skin texture. So, if you do have any concerns, always ask your doctor for advice.

Can skincare help get rid of a wrinkly tummy?

There’s a limit to what skincare can do for deep-set wrinkling of your stomach, but for mild to moderate lines, keeping your skin well-moisturised with rich, buttery creams and ingredients such as hyaluronic acid could be helpful. Take the time to really massage them into your skin on your stomach, as this can help improve blood circulation and promote skin elasticity in the area. Sunscreen is also very important, especially in the summer, when your stomach is more exposed to the sun. There’s been a recent boom in retinoid-based products for the body too. Just like a retinol serum for the face, these formulas are designed to help stimulate your skin’s natural renewal process, which can smooth away the appearance of fine lines and wrinkling your body, which has been caused by dull and damaged skin.

How much, on average, would treating a wrinkly tummy cost?

Depending on the way you decide to treat the concern, the costs could vary quite widely. Electrical Muscle Stimulation starts from around £100, laser therapies from around £500, RF microneedling from £600, and Ultherapy from £1500.
