Treating acne has always been tricky. In fact, active acne breakouts are sometimes a firm contraindication (aka a no-go area) for many treatments, leaving those struggling with breakouts without a helping hand, while increasing their risk of side effects including low self-esteem and scarring. Until now that is…
A new treatment called AviClear is offering a totally different, drug-free solution for acne, and it’s even proven to work on active acne for long-lasting skin improvements. That includes severe lesions, which is particularly impressive! Alice went to see the device in action at Dr Anjali Mahto‘s Self clinic in Harley Street. Watch the video (and read on) to discover exactly how it works. And, most importantly, how you can book in.
What is AviClear and how does it work?
AviClear by Cutera is the first (and currently only) FDA-cleared energy device for acne, which means it’s making a pretty big splash in the aesthetics industry. No wonder Dr Mahto has dubbed it “the most exciting thing to happen in the world of acne in a long time.”
Most acne solutions treat the symptoms (aka lesions), but this clever tech is designed to target acne at its source instead, which means it can treat mild, moderate, and severe breakouts without aggressive side effects for your skin.
Specifically, the laser technology uses a particular 1726nm wavelength of light to selectively target oil glands, shrink them, and suppress sebum production. This reduction in sebum leads to long-lasting acne-reducing results, due to fewer blocked pores and thus shorter, less intense breakouts over time.
Who is it suitable for?
From spotty teenagers to stubborn adult acne during menopause, what’s great about AviClear is that it can be used to treat any kind of acne, including hormonal and cystic acne.
“AviClear is an excellent option for pretty much anyone with mild to severe acne,” says Dr Mahto. “It’s there for people who can’t or don’t want to take oral medication; for people who have come off the [contraceptive] pill; those going through egg freezing; or women going through the menopause and taking HRT. That can all make acne flare up.”
It’s also suitable for all skin types and tones, because the precise technology prevents injury to the skin’s surface, eliminating the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

In the video below, you can watch the exciting device being used in Dr Mahto’s clinic, showcasing the process of treatment and what you can expect:
Does it hurt?
The clever minds at Cutera (the company behind AviClear) have thought of this too. The device is equipped with AviCool technology, a smart skin-cooling feature designed to enhance comfort during treatment, and hydrating gauze is also placed on the skin throughout. That means you feel a “little tiny pinch” as the laser is used on the skin – around a 3 to a 5 on the pain scale – and you don’t need numbing cream.
How quickly can you see results?
It depends on the severity of your breakouts, but most people need three 30-minute sessions spaced four weeks apart to see the best results – so a bit of patience is required. That said, impressively, in AviClear’s clinical study, 80% of patients treated with AviClear saw at least half their acne resolved after three months and that number rose to 92% at 12 months.
