Keeping up with the latest lasers can feel like a full-time job. To discover what’s special about UltraClear, the first cold fibre ablative skin-resurfacing laser, which is safe and effective on all skin tones, I visited Dr Raj Thethi at The Yorkshire Skin Centre to find out about his work. At the centre, the treatments on offer range from advanced facials and skin peels, via injectables, to the latest complex cosmetics devices, so I wanted to ask about his approach to aesthetics and how lasers like UltraClear fit in.
Dr Thethi is widely respected as a practitioner and a trainer in the field of aesthetic medicine and ‘respecting the patient’s anatomy’ – doctor-speak for ‘treating you so that you look like yourself afterwards’ – is particularly important to him and his team.
‘We don’t mess around with faces,’ he says. ‘If you can see we’ve performed a treatment, it hasn’t been done right – and we just don’t do that at all.’
‘Normality [in a face] is really difficult to understand,’ says Dr Thethi, ‘and especially when you are given the power of having a syringe [of filler] in your hand and the ability to potentially create and sculpt shapes, understanding what’s ‘normal’ is really important.’
Depending on how it is used, UltraClear can help reverse common signs of ageing, including fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, age spots, uneven skin texture and acne scarring. You can expect a smoother, clearer and more radiant-looking complexion in one treatment.
It’s the first cold fibre ablative laser, which essentially means that it can deliver cold resurfacing pulses of light to the surface of the skin while at the same time delivering pulses of thermal (i.e. heat) energy to the lower layers of the skin, to stimulate skin renewal.
You can have a lightweight treatment that’s almost like a skin peel, which takes minutes and doesn’t need numbing cream, and after which you can carry on with life as normal. Or, you can have a more advanced treatment to promote collagen remodelling – cue fewer wrinkles as well as a smoother skin surface – or to tackle pigmentation within the skin. With a more intense treatment, there will be between two and eight days of downtime.
In the video, you can watch Dr Thethi’s patient Abie having a ‘3DMiracl’ treatment, a superficial resurfacing treatment, and see how each pulse of the treatment is coring out thousands of tiny holes to encourage a smoother skin surface. This is followed by some deeper ‘Ultra’ pulses in specific places where Abie would like collagen regeneration, and to treat an old scar.
